An SLK250 version will be added next spring that will come with a 201-horsepower direct-injected 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and either a six-speed manual or the aforementioned automatic gearbox. The new SLK includes sun-reflecting leather upholstery, with available Airscarf neck-level heating vents built into the seats to help extend convertible season; the top can be fitted with an optional Magic Sky Control glass panel that can switch from light to dark transparency at the push of a button.

Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class Wants the World, and Wants It Soon

Shown on Wednesday: Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class.
Is it real? Despite its Tuesday debut at the Shanghai auto show and its appearance at an off-site Mercedes party here on Tuesday, the Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class was among the most highly anticipated unveilings at the Javits center. The concept is the source from which four compact-platform Mercedes models will spring in coming years, according to Joachim Schmidt, the brand’s head of sales and marketing.
What they said: “Concept A-Class is the pulse of a new generation,” said Mr. Schmidt. Intimations of 1980s Pepsi commercials aside, the car is clearly aimed at a younger customer. It is equipped with a suite of connectivity features “with all the latest smartphone applications,” Mr. Schmidt said.
What they didn’t say: The concept is a global car, built on a global platform, revealed in a tightly choreographed global campaign, but aside from Europe and a cursory mention of the United States market, a production or rollout strategy was discussed in only the broadest terms.
What makes it tick? A 210-horsepower BlueEfficiency 4-cylinder engine theoretically powers the concept; the hood was not lifted for confirmation. But the full gamut of Mercedes propulsion systems, including electric and hybrid variants — and even an AMG version — are being discussed, according to Ola Kaellenius, head of Mercedes’ AMG performance division.
How much? How soon? Mr. Schmidt said the production A-Class would reach Europe, where, unlike in the United States, an A-Class has been sold for more than a decade. The A-Class and its derivatives “will make their way to the U.S.,” Mr. Schmidt said, but no timetable was provided. At the brand’s off-site event on Tuesday, however, company executives mentioned a three-year window within which the A-Class can be expected in the United States.
How’s it look? The concept follows the German brand’s relatively new emphasis on high beltlines and low greenhouses — also seen on the redesigned CLS sedan — a recipe for high auto-show drama but low road-going visibility for driver and passengers. A honeycombed aluminum grille presents a welcome deviation from the brand’s traditional bars-and-star treatment.
